Heritage: Not Heredity

God is our Father-Mother-Creator. All that He/She creates is good, perfect and upright. Man created in His image and likeness is the recipient and rightful owner of this divine heritage.

In Science and Health, under the marginal heading, ’No fleshly heredity’, we read,”…that nothing inharmonious can enter being for Life is God. Heredity is a prolific subject for mortal belief to pin theories upon; but if we learn that nothing is real but the right, we shall have no dangerous inheritances, and fleshly ills will disappear.” Further down on the same page we read, that when we obey Jesus command, “‘Take no thought for your life’ we shall never depend on bodily conditions, structure, or economy, but we shall be masters of the body, dictate its terms, and form and control it with Truth.”[S&H 228:5]

Heredity is a mortal belief in corporeality. It is the antipode of spiritual reality. Man expresses his God given dominion over every fleshly element that tries to dominate thought. This promise is man’s ticket to freedom. It is man’s divine heritage to enjoy and share, without a personal monopoly on it.

In her other writings, Retrospection and Introspection, on page 22, Mrs Eddy writes,” The human history needs to be revised and the material record expunged.”

Man has no history to record, only His Story to repeat and to reflect.
This divine understanding unclasps the hold that heredity seems to have on man, and gives us the choice, the freedom, and the privilege to accept only His heritage as our true record. Any false baggage that we may tend to carry, of the past history or false education is instantly dropped off, when we awake and claim our divine heritage as God’s children.

This heritage is new every morning and fresh as the dew. Let us then, solemnly resolve to accept this birthright, and utilise our rich legacy to its fullest, and be blessed.
