Wonderful protection
Have you ever really prayed to God? Have you ever cried out, "Dear God I need your help."
I had one such incident recently.
A friend and I had decided to go for a bike ride after church. I loaded the bikes unto a bike rack at the rear of the car, the rack is on a substantial steel pole which attaches into the tow hitch secured by a steel bolt and a cotter pin. I always check the cotter pin has clicked into place.
About 4 miles from my house I was proceeding down Highway 5, a five lane highway from Los Angeles to San Diego, and probably one of the busiest roads in the United States, particularly at midday on a Sunday.
I was in the second lane, the traffic was heavy. Suddenly I heard a bang, looked in the mirror, and to my horror I saw the two bikes and the steel pole had come off the car, and were bouncing down the highway. I immediately said, "Oh dear God." And it was a prayer, for I knew the possible ramifications. I got over the two lanes to the hard shoulder as fast as I could, and started backing the car. I had gone about 50 yards when I realized if I went the extra 50 yards to opposite where the bikes were, I would be blocking this lane unto which many cars were now swerving. I turned on my emergency flashers and then ran the remaining fifty yards.
I reached out to God. I declared that as Science and Health states p.424, " Accidents are unknown to God, and we must leave the mortal basis of belief and unite with the one Mind, in order to change the notion of chance to the proper sense of God’s unerring direction and thus bring out harmony." The words that stood out to me at that moment were "God’s unerring direction."
For a moment I felt great panic at the possible consequences of a major pile-up, then I gave thanks to God to realize that every one of the drivers and their passengers was the protected idea of God under divine direction, and that they were expressing precision and accuracy, that there could be no accidents in the divine order of God’s harmony, that every one of those drivers and their passengers were safe. I was amazed at the dexterity of those drivers, how every one of these many cars, moving at 65 mph and possibly above, avoided the bicycles in the middle of the road, and also hitting each other, it was like watching a ballet of cars.
I had raised my arms in some gesture of trying to warn them, but I felt a sense of impotency. Then I remembered seeing a movie about the story of Moses standing at the Red Sea with his arms raised, and how God had parted the sea to allow the Israelites safe passage. I mentally declared this traffic must stop to allow me to retrieve those bikes. I felt in this extreme circumstance I was reaching out to God.
Instantly it seemed as if a giant hand had put up a stop sign about three hundred yards down the highway, and suddenly there were no cars in the nearside two lanes. I ran out into the middle of the highway and grabbed the two bikes and the steel pole lying between the second and third lanes and dragged them unto the hard shoulder and up unto the grassy bank. I lay there panting but giving profound gratitude to God for this deliverance. I managed to put the two bicycles into the back of the car, and drove home in great rejoicing to God for this proof of divine protection.
I have had wonderful protection in my life. Protection from terrorism, bombs and bullets in Belfast, Northern Ireland, for thirty years where I had several businesses, a boating incident with the possibility of drowning, and twice on jet aircraft when one of the engines had gone on fire at the point of take-off. I ascribe unto our God thanks, and in the words of the writer of Proverbs 18. "The name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous runneth into it, and it is safe."
There is always a protection for God’s people when we realize our oneness with the Father, and that accidents are unknown to the divine order of the law of harmony. This law of harmony encapsulates every facet and aspect of our being, and when rightfully and righteously appealed to brings into force all the embracing arms of everlasting protection. I am very grateful to God for some understanding of the laws of being and safety as revealed by Mary Baker Eddy.
